The last thing you might be thinking about is your personal trainer’s professionalism while sweat is dripping in your eyes and your personal trainer is pushing you to do 10 more crunches. But, your personal trainer’s persistence in pushing you is an indication of their professionalism.

Simply, you and your personal trainer have established a business relationship, or more welcoming recognized, a partnership. Nonetheless, this partnership or business relationship requires a certain level of commitment from both parties. You have the right to demand a lot from your trainer, but your trainer should be able to expect a certain amount of professionalism from you. How can you be the best client you can be?

Stay on top of your schedule. Keep in mind your trainer has a schedule too. If you are late getting started, expect your session to be cut short and to be charged full price. Your personal trainer has multiple clients, and isn’t going to short change them because of your mistake.

Don’t answer your phone, pager or e-mail. Getting the most out of your workout requires full concentration. It’s true we live in a constantly connected world, but for the sake of gaining a healthier lifestyle and for showing your personal trainer respect, do away with this urge of staying connected for an hour or so.

Don’t whine. No one said it would be easy, so don’t complain! Keep positive and realize it is going to take work. Luckily, your personal trainer is there to keep you motivated. Remember this, before giving them a hard time.

Speak up. Like any professional relationship, communication is key. Your personal trainer is there to push you, but only you can tell how your body is feeling. So speak up and tell your trainer what feels right or wrong, and most importantly, ASK QUESTIONS.

For those of you in Fairfield County already working with a personal trainer, what are some other tips to being the best client you can be?
